When: Fri., June 29, 7 p.m. 2012

Why not lie? In so many situations, deception can afford one an advantage over others. Yet, societally, we still value truth as such over any specific advantage that could be gained by a lie. Author and Duke University professor of psychology and behavioral economics Dan Ariely pops the hood on that complex psychodynamic in his new book The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone—Especially Ourselves. Combining frank observation with innovative experiments, Ariely blows the fog away from our motivations for lying, demonstrating how little rationality comes into play. Ariely has appeared on NPR and network television news magazines, and his work has been featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He also runs the Center for Advanced Hindsight, which curates topical exhibitions that cross art with psychological research. (The Center's second show, Poor Quality: Inequality, runs through Aug. 31.) Ariely reads from and discusses his book at 7 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
