Cut Worms

When: Sat., July 14, 9 p.m. 2018

As Cut Worms, singer-songwriter Max Clarke wears his sixties-era rock influences on his sleeve, but don't mistake his transparency for pure mimicry. Clarke excels at throwing his songs a little off-kilter. On his new record, Hollow Ground, Clarke's blink-and-you'll-miss-them flourishes have a cumulative effect of making the album feel lightly warped, like a Warhol print hanging slightly crooked on the wall. Other twists aren't so subtle—on "It Won't Be Too Long," Clarke leans into a twangy, honky-tonk feel; "Till Tomorrow Goes Away" follows with twinkling keys in the background that lend it an eerie edge. For Clarke, it seems, the devil—and the delight—is all in the details. Shy Boys, from Kansas City, takes the middle slot with its own strain of punchy rock, and Raleigh's The Dinwiddies open with weed ditties. —Allison Hussey
