Few string quartets from Spain had achieved international acclaim before Cuarteto Casals formed in the late ’90s. For this concert, the ensemble offers a series of contrasts. Mozart’s “Spring” quartet is a bouquet of affable bows and twirls, and the group’s take on it has been widely acclaimed. Shostakovich’s Fifth, on the other hand, is a darker journey, mixing together his angst-ridden melodies, icy harmonies and sense of foreboding. Finally, Ravel’s string quartet is all flashes of light drenched in French ambivalence. —Dan Ruccia
