Crazy, Stupid, Love.

When: Fri., July 29 2011

Area Theaters—Screenings for this romantic comedy starring (deep breath) Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon haven't been available, but I did get a chance to read the script through a screenwriter friend last year, and it's a cut above most Hollywood rom-coms. Carell plays a cuckolded husband thrust back into the singles scene who falls under the wing of Gosling's lothario. Surrounding them are numerous other characters prone to impulsive, unexpected romantic feelings and it all leads to a predictably chaotic climax. The filmmakers' backgrounds are the very opposite of rom-com; screenwriter Dan Fogelman is best known for such animated films as Cars and Tangled, while directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa co-wrote Bad Santa and co-wrote/directed the prison love/con man comedy I Love You Phillip Morris. The first few reviews indicate that there might be a little more cleverness to this than the average romantic comedy; let's hope so. See listings for showtimes. —Zack Smith
