Counting Crows, Augustana

When: Thu., July 15, 6:30 p.m. 2010

The Counting Crows—and especially its petulant frontman, Adam Duritz—haven't aged gracefully. Really, Duritz hasn't written a great song since the dawn of the last decade, and the band's last two albums have been a series of half-executed concepts that have mostly worked to expose the limits of Duritz' songwriting tendencies. But both August and Everything After and Recovering the Satellites, the band's mid-'90s masterpieces, generated tentacles of influence that spread from extreme metal (Between the Buried and Me is named for Counting Crows) to the most polite indie bard (Duritz, at his best, was an achingly keen, detailed lyricist, channeling rage in a whimper). Depending on your perspective, this is a case of again heroes or pariahs doing the only thing they know how to do. If it's the latter, it's a case worth reconsidering. The Counting Crows Traveling Circus & Medicine Show begins at 6:30 p.m. NOTAR and Augustana opens the show. Grayson Currin

Price: $40.50–$60.50
