Cool Hand Luke

When: Sun., Sept. 8, 7 p.m. 2013

How many hard-boiled eggs can you eat? Paul Newman's defiant performance elevated Cool Hand Luke from prison drama to social commentary in the 1967 film directed by Stuart Rosenberg. Newman plays a decorated World War II vet bored out of his mind in the postwar South. Chip perpetually on his shoulder, he ends up in a rural Florida prison, working on a chain gang and battling just about anyone who looks at him. Strother Martin provides high menace as the chain gang's captain, a stoic and cruel figure who walks the line between terrifying and ridiculous. As great as Newman's performance is, George Kennedy's may be better: He won the best supporting actor Oscar for playing Dragline, a fellow convict who comes to idolize Luke. —Chris Vitiello
