Coliseum, Child Bite, SOON

When: Mon., June 8, 8:30 p.m. 2015

The Kentucky trio Coliseum have evolved from a snarling, brutish hardcore band into a burly, hard-rock outfit with a knack for hooks. This month’s Anxiety’s Kiss continues the trend. Without shedding shouted choruses, the album takes a more expansive approach. Guitars that were once content to stomp and surge have become more agile and wiry, and there’s more swing in the low-end. When Ryan Patterson bellows “We will rise” near the album’s start, his conviction sounds perfectly reasonable. Coliseum, remember, is now working the same sweet spot between heavy metal heft and pop impact that built followings for Torche and Red Fang. Detroit’s noise addled punk band Child Bite open, alongside the soaring, heavy psych-rock of Chapel Hill’s SOON. —Bryan C. Reed
