Colin Meloy, Eleanor Friedberger

When: Wed., Nov. 6, 8 p.m. 2013

Colin Meloy's band The Decemberists are, well, divisive. Still, the complicated structures, dense narratives and highfalutin lexicon of their melodic indie-rock songs have brought the Portland band a large, devoted cult of fans who'll follow them to the end of any elaborate sea shanty. For others, it's the sort of endeavor that demands the return of the phrase "Dorkus Malorkus." A solo tour from Meloy surprisingly doesn't scramble that dynamic much, but his new EP of loving Kinks covers might. Eleanor Friedberger, who shares the bill, once inhabited a similar "love 'em or hate 'em" zone with her brother in the sometimes great Fiery Furnaces. But as a solo artist, she's been making '70s-style singer-songwriter jams built on warmth and craft. This year's Personal Record is a knockout. Don't miss Eleanor, and help Mr. Meloy tip his captain's hat to the Davies brothers shortly thereafter. —Jeff Klingman
