Cold War Kids, Wild Fur, Jack The Radio

When: Fri., May 29, 6 p.m. 2015

You might wonder what’s changed for California’s Cold War Kids since February, when they sold out the 700-person Haw River Ballroom, to warrant their step up to a 6,000-seat amphitheater. Nothing, actually. Though they did issue “First,” the second single from last year’s Hold My Home, in March, the piano-and-handclap jam hasn’t had the same purchase as the band’s early hits, the decade-old “Hang Me up to Dry” and “We Used to Vacation.” Instead, their touring schedule and price point simply synced with the desire of 95X—“Raleigh’s New Rock Alternative”—to throw a big, free show. The station’s Chris Edge says that Cold War Kids don’t really have any songs in frequent rotation with 95X, as those old hits haven’t tested well enough to stick around. It’s a strange fit, but we’ll take the free gig. —Grayson Haver Currin
