When: Sat., April 14, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. 2012

It's hard to overstate the influence and ubiquity of Clyde Jones' "critters" in the North Carolina folk art community. His wooden sculptures shaped like fantasy animals have long been treasured by patrons in Chatham County and beyond who sport Clyde's critters on their lawn, like localized and much cooler alternatives to garden gnomes or pink flamingos. He's known throughout the art world, too; check out the photo on page 38 of a work in Chris Bradley's current exhibit at Raleigh's Contemporary Art Museum. (The piece likely is titled "Clyde" for a reason.)

ChathamArts, which sponsors creative events of all kinds in Chatham County throughout the year, presents its 11th annual ClydeFest in tribute to the artist from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's a family event featuring a children's carnival, art activities, live music and a performance by the Takiri Folklorico Latin Dance Company. The Bynum Ballfield is at 173 Bynum Hill Road, just off Highway 15-501 between Fearrington Village and Pittsboro. Admission is $7, or $3 for children under 12. —Peter Blackstock
