CIOMPI QUARTET, FEATURING NNENNA FREELON
BALDWIN AUDITORIUM, DURHAM
SATURDAY, OCT. 3
When you reach an anniversary with a zero at the end of it, the occasion calls for reflection. Duke University fêtes its resident Ciompi Quartet all year in recognition of a 50th-anniversary season. It kicks off with the quartet's traditional opening concert of Haydn before the debut of a collaboration with Durham jazz treasure Nnenna Freelon. The Ciompi presents Haydn's second-to-last quartet as well as Beethoven's mid-career "Harp" Quartet. Then, the multi-Grammy-nominated Freelon joins the Ciompi for a finale of Akua Dixon's New Arrangements of Old Songs. While classical arrangements and formal concert settings can sometimes sap the power out of spiritual or work numbers, the versatile Dixon should be trusted to keep the original, raw emotions intact. And, of course, Nnenna's in the house.
