Lavish, old-fashioned and frequently dull, Disney's new live-action update is the movie equivalent of those proper old hardcover fairy tale books, with the ornamental lettering and baroque illustrations. Director Kenneth Branagh keeps the proceedings reverent and gorgeous to behold, but the film just isn't much fun. It's a curiously inert update, with none of the flash or revisionism of recent Disney outings Into the Woods or Maleficent. Lily James (Downton Abbey) is likable in the lead, and wily veterans Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter add some flair as the evil stepmother and fairy godmother, respectively.
