Chris Stamey

When: Tue., Aug. 2, 8 p.m. 2011

Eleven years ago at another small venue just across the back alley from this Franklin Street hangout, local pop Svengali Chris Stamey workshopped a bunch of tunes that eventually became his last solo disc, 2004's Travels in the South. Now he's "coming out of retirement," as he put it, for a similar string of shows at the West End Wine Bar, though he's really been anything but idle of late. When not ringleading high-profile Big Star tribute shows at home and far away, he's lending his Midas touch in the studio to artists ranging from local up-and-comer Brett Harris to West Coast janglers the Parson Red Heads. When Stamey played this room a month ago with a first-rate backing crew, he mixed old favorites with new and rediscovered numbers that may surface on an acoustic record he's plotting with cellist Josh Starmer and others. He'll take the stage at 8 p.m. as part of West End's series of free Tuesday shows running through the end of September; subsequent weeks feature Jeff Crawford, Skylar Gudasz & the Ugly Girls and Birds & Arrows. —Peter Blackstock
