Chris Mooney

When: Tue., May 8, 7:30 p.m. 2012

If you're like us, you're already weary of the interminable presidential election—the daily barrage of phony gaffes, specious accusations and manipulative photo ops, all packaged and narrated by the TV news channels. But what if there's something more going on than a corporate infotainment cycle fed by both sides with equal cynicism? What if there are biological differences between Democrats and Republicans that would explain why the latter tend to deny the most undeniably facty things, like evolution and climate change? Seven years after his book The Republican War on Science appeared, Chris Mooney is at it again with The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science—and Reality, which purports to uncover cognitive differences between Republicans and Democrats and goes on to argue for mutual understanding between the two. This makes us think of bridge-building efforts that might have taken place between homos sapiens and Neandertals, and how well that must have gone. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. —David Fellerath
