Cherry Bomb Ball benefit for Independent Animal Rescue with Schooner, Birds & Arrows, Tender Fruit, Lera Lynn, Small Ponds

When: Fri., Oct. 21, 7 p.m. 2011

Raleigh songstress Caitlin Cary helped organize this benefit for the Independent Animal Rescue in honor of her dog, Cherry Bomb, a rescue that underwent several surgeries on her way to a happy and active life. (In the interest of full disclosure, her co-organizer and husband, Skillet Gilmore, works at the Independent Weekly.) The evening begins with a just-for-fun dog show before transitioning into a concert stacked with great locals. Schooner headlines with frenetic pop that tags catchy '60s melodies with a distorted rock edge. The Tender Fruit leverages gorgeous folk shambles and the devastating voice of Christy Smith for endlessly redemptive heartbreak. Birds and Arrows, Lera Lynn and Cary's band Small Ponds also play. —Jordan Lawrence

Price: $10-12
