Chennai Express

Rated NR 141 min. 2013

A sweet shop entrepreneur (Shah Rukh Khan) delivering his beloved grandfather's ashes to a holy place becomes entangled with a gangster's daughter fleeing her arranged marriage. A riff on Shah Rukh's greatest hit, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge—itself a riff on It Happened One Night—this comedy/drama/romance/culture clash/gangster movie should be smack dab in SRK's comfort zone. "I've done this before" he acknowledges, after helping the runaway bride catch the train, recalling one of his iconic Hindi film scenes. And, that's the problem. Striving frantically to hit all the right notes, Chennai looks great (with a glowing sun-soaked color palette) and has energetic songs by Vishal and Shekar. Yet in spite of some amusing comedy and a tear-stained climax, this blockbuster lacks heart.
