Chelsea Crowell

When: Thu., April 12, 9:30 p.m. 2012

"It has been rumored that Chelsea is of blood relation to talented people of great interest. No DNA test has been done," singer-songwriter Chelsea Crowell coyly quips on her website. OK, we won't tell anyone she's Rosanne Cash and Rodney Crowell's daughter if you don't. But never mind the pedigree: Her 2011 album Crystal City would be worth checking out even if her parents were untalented people of no interest. As a lyricist, Crowell is still finding her way; as a singer, she has a natural gift that she uses to alluring effect. Most important, she has an instinct for good sounds, whether it's the countryish charm you might expect ("Don't Talk About The Girl"); the indie coolness you might not ("I'm Gonna Freeze"); or the five-minute instrumental out of left field ("For Stormy"). Opening for Crowell at 9:30 p.m. is a songwriters' circle of local notables BJ Barham, Reese McHenry, J Kutchma and Lizzy Ross. —Peter Blackstock
