Chatham County Line with Jay Brown, Zeke Hutchins & Johnny Irion

When: Wed., Dec. 15, 9 p.m. 2010

This December-in-Raleigh rite marks the seventh year Chatham County Line has gathered its friends around the microphone to celebrate the season. For a little longer than that, too, Chatham County Line has been as refreshing an act as you'll find in the Americana wheelhouse. The quartet—which features mandolin, fiddle, guitar, upright bass, banjo and a gathering of voices that sounds as warm as amber looks—refuses to let its bluegrass virtuosity get in the way of songcraft and versatility. Indeed, from the first album's "WSM (650)" to "Porcelain Doll" off this year's expansive Wildwood, the state's most assured outfit dresses Dave Wilson's stories with perfect, tasteful accompaniment. What's more, they've never taken their place for granted, relentlessly testing new ground, whether it be sociopolitical laments (see "Birmingham Jail") or the electric guitars and rock drums that shape the Wildwood canvas. This night, expect the best of CCL and the best of the season—both with yuletide favorites and with the delight the band will take in sharing the stage with friends Johnny Irion, Zeke Hutchins, Jay Brown and more. You'll also get two Chatham County Lines—the first acoustic, the next prowling and electric—for the price of the $17 ticket ($20 at the door). The music starts at 9:30 p.m. —Grayson Currin
