Charming Gardeners, Weinberg Cole & Underwood

When: Wed., Sept. 1, 10 p.m. 2010

Though the MySpace page of Charming Gardeners proclaims the Dallas quartet as "'60s pop for the 21st century" and "the new maximum R&B," don't take their word for it. The band hardly resembles The Who, their less destructive peers or, for that matter, even R&B. Instead, the Gardeners ply melancholy, moderately hooky pop-rock jangles more reminiscent of the mid-'90s. While the arrangements tend to be rather unremarkable, singer Amy Curnow possesses undeniable vocal talent that shines when she plays up her sultry sass on slow soul burners. Weinberg, Cole & Underwood—a brand new local trio featuring current and former members of Squirrel Nut Zippers, Snatches of Pink and Fantastico—opens. —Spencer Griffith
