Chairlift, Nite Jewel, Bell

When: Fri., April 20, 9:30 p.m. 2012

Indie pop's prevailing appeal is sugar-rush hooks that aren't as cheap and grabby as those on the radio. During the past few years, though, that bouncy style has been usurped by druggy, retro-crazy songwriting. This is not a bad thing when those synth-hum sectarians mature, which is the case with Brooklyn's Chairlift. Their latest, Something, belies its modest title with the head-nodding slow jam "Amanaemonesia." The new album from Los Angeles' Nite Jewel, the one-woman project of Ramona Gonzalez, fuses '80s facsimile with arch, aching ballads. Oh, how the little glo-fi geeks have grown. Bell opens the 9:30 p.m. show. —Brandon Soderberg
