CenterFest Arts Festival

When: Sat., Sept. 20, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sun., Sept. 21, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 2014

The Durham Arts Council's annual CenterFest Arts Festival returns to shut down most of Durham's Downtown Loop for a teeming weekend of arts, crafts, food, music and general civic pride. This marks the juried outdoor art festival's 40th year, and it looks to be the biggest one ever. There will be 140 artists and crafters from 16 states, sharing their knowledge and plying their wares. There will be nonstop live music and entertainment on six stages from 72 mostly local groups, including The Pinkerton Raid, the Durham Jazz Orchestra and jump-rope team the Bouncing Bulldogs. This year, the festival expands in scope with nighttime music on Saturday at the "Herald-Sun Stage and Beer Garden at Bull McCabe's" until 9 p.m. There will be plenty to eat everywhere and lots of art activities for both kids and adults—why not learn to throw clay pots or paint a mural? If you live in the Triangle, you can't miss it. If you live in Durham, take that literally. —Brian Howe
