This is one of the most adorable movies featuring drugs, alcohol, infidelity, prostitution and bribery that you'll ever see. Nebbish and insurance salesman Tim Lippe (Ed Helms) ventures beyond the confines of his small Wisconsin town to the bright lights of Cedar Rapids, Iowa for his guild's annual conference. There, he finds himself roomed with Dean Ziegler (John C. Reilly), a boozy blowhard who is deeply cynical about his profession. Although playing to type, Helms and Reilly's comedic timing and energy carry the film through its more mundane moments. The film's true revelation is Anne Heche as Joan, a married insurance agent who uses this annual soirée as her escape from marriage and motherhood. Heche's ability has always been overshadowed by her tumultuous personal life, and here she fashions director Miguel Arteta's most three-dimensional character, a woman who is at once sexy, sincere and world-weary.
