CAT WARREN: WHAT THE DOG KNOWS

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, RALEIGH SATURDAY, MARCH 28, PITTSBORO

QUAIL RIDGE BOOKS & MUSIC | MCINTYRE'S FINE BOOKS—NCSU journalism professor Cat Warren's new book might sound like a "wisdom of animals" sort of thing, and it is—just not in a pop-inspirational way. What the dog knows isn't kibble for the soul, it's where the bodies are buried. Warren is a cadaver-dog handler, and her book details seven years of corpse-hunting with a German Shepherd named Solo. From finding drugs and bombs to unmarked war graves and drowning victims, the canine nose knows things that seem impossible. But Warren unfolds the history and science of service dogs through research and interviews with cognitive psychologists, medical examiners, breeders and trainers and other experts.
