Carrie | Indy Week

Rated R 92 min. 2013

Kimberly Peirce's film, the newest iteration of the character created by Stephen King for his 1974 novel, follows the same path that its predecessors have trod so handily. Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), a social outcast among her peers thanks in part to her religious mother (Julianne Moore), is now being bullied by classmates via social media threats. When the infamous viscera shower occurs at the prom, it is clear that this is merely a reboot in search of enough box office fortune to spawn a series. Peirce has proven herself a talented filmmaker in such work as Boys Don't Cry and the underrated Stop-Loss, but she is clearly here to do a job and get paid. When dealing with a story that everyone knows, you have to offer more than terrible CGI and the tired cliché of having a beautiful girl play a character who everyone is supposed to find hideous.
