BACK-TO-SCHOOL ROCK BASH

CAT'S CRADLE, CARRBORO

SATURDAY, SEPT. 19

With its associations of thinning hairlines, ill-fitting jeans and past-their-prime progenitors reliving Cheap Trick teens, the term "Dad Rock" is rarely a compliment. But a couple of area dads who happen to play rock have seized the notion of dads rocking and brandish it with pride. Now in its third year, the Carrboro Elementary Back-to-School Rock Bash unites area bands—all with a shared interest in the younger set—merging their talents with the aim of being true to their school. Topping the bill once again is the beloved lowbrow institution Southern Culture on the Skids, which, despite receiving highbrow treatment from the Southern Folklife Collection, is known for wild stage antics that sometimes incorporate the use of cooked poultry products. Returning acts include Michael Rank, the Swang Brothers and Dave Hedeman of the Vagabond Union. A rare meeting of Shark Quest adds special intrigue to the bill. A well-loved Triangle outfit that has slowed considerably during the last decade, Shark Quest trades in charming, surrealistic tunes wrought from instrumentation both baroque and back-porch. You can't argue with the basic math of "kids under 11 can rock for free." 11:30 a.m.2:30 p.m., $10, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-967-9053, www.catscradle.com. —David Klein
