Changes have already hit the Gellman house at the opening of Tony Kushner's 2004 musical Caroline, or Change, and even bigger ones are on the way. After 8-year-old Noah's mom has recently died from cancer, he spends most of his days with the title character, an indomitable African American woman who works as the family's maid. But it's the winter of 1963 in Louisiana, and Caroline's undergoing changes of her own: economic hardship stemming from a broken marriage and a teenage daughter drawn to the growing civil rights movement. The effect Noah and Caroline ultimately have on one another is told through fantastical staging (as household appliances come to life) and a score mixing Klezmer and classical music with spirituals and rhythm and blues. Karen Dacons-Brock directs a cast including Lora Tatum and Arel Marsh.
