Carolina Rollergirls

When: Sat., Feb. 19, 3 p.m. 2011

Quick, name a sports franchise—other than the Green Bay Packers—that is community-owned, battles big-market teams in a small-market city and still wins more than its share every year. That's right, it's our Carolina Rollergirls, who finished 2010 ranked sixth in the East (so maybe 25th overall?) in the 105-team Women's Flat Track Derby Association standings. N.C. State's basketball teams should be this good. (If they were, maybe they'd be as much fun to watch as our 'girls. Maybe.)

For their 2011 opener, the Rollergirls feature new talent and new muscle thanks to some serious cross-training. They take on the Washington, D.C., club in the main event at 5 p.m., after an always-entertaining bout between intra-squad B-teams at 3 p.m. Tickets are $14, $7 for kids on game day; you can save a little by buying in advance online. —Bob Geary

Price: $14 ($7 for kids)
