Captain Phillips

Rated PG-13 134 min. 2013

Based on the true events of April 2009, four teenage Somali pirates hijack a U.S.-flagged freighter helmed by Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) while navigating the Horn of Africa. Eventually, the pirates commandeer the ship's lifeboat to attempt an escape back to their homeland, taking Phillips as their hostage. Beyond the compelling story about personal courage, director Paul Greengrass (United 93, The Bourne Supremacy / Ultimatum) juxtaposes the harrowing events against our myopic, one-size-fits-all branding of contemporary international terrorism. Moreover, the director deconstructs Hollywood's romanticized treatment of piracy dating back to the silent film era. This is actually the story of two captains: Phillips, the resolute yet emotionally vulnerable hero, and Muse (newcomer Barkhad Abdi, terrific), a dead-eyed mercenary who is both savvy yet seemingly over his head. Phillips asks his Somali foil whether there's more to life than being a fisherman who kidnaps people. Muse responds: "Maybe in America."
