Captain America: The First Avenger

When: Fri., July 22 2011

Local Cinemas—The least heralded of the summer's many superhero films might be the one that surprises everybody. Though it doesn't have the heavy promotion of Thor or Green Lantern, or the history of previous films like X-Men: First Class, this WWII tale of the Marvel Comics super-soldier has been getting positive feedback on its trailers and ads, and looks to be a good-old-fashioned slam-bang adventure story. Though it's somewhat objectionable that it should star Chris Evans, who already played the Human Torch in two Fantastic Four films just a few years ago. WORLDS ARE COLLIDING! Still, it should be better than the infamous 1990 Captain America film, which bypassed theaters for a life on bootleg video. The plastic-looking costume and the fact that Nazi villain The Red Skull was somehow Italian might have played a role in this, though there's this fun fact: Cap was played by J.D. Salinger's son, Matt. Anyway, who doesn't like watching Nazis get exploded? Check our movie listings for showtimes. —Zack Smith
