Cannibal Corpse, Exhumed, Abysmal Dawn, Arkaik

When: Sat., April 7, 7:45 p.m. 2012

If you have an opinion about death metal, you probably have a pretty strong opinion about Cannibal Corpse, the long-running Buffalo, N.Y., crew that has helped define the form in terms of lyrics, arrangements and imagery. Banned in some countries and blasted in others, Cannibal Corpse has metaphorically bled for their music's metaphorical gore, yet they've only pushed harder, tightening their sound while occasionally adding stylistic surprises. Their 12th album, the just-out Torture, sounds as urgent as ever, airtight beats and anxious bass lines blasting beneath relentless guitars and vocals concerning menace and maul. But there's a little sludge, some strange solos and the sense that, even after two decades, Cannibal Corpse still has fresh flesh to eat. —Grayson Currin
