GRANDMA SPARROW

MARSH WOODWINDS, RALEIGH | WEDNESDAY, FEB. 25

On Grandma Sparrow and his Piddletractor Orchestra, the record Joe Westerlund released last spring, the Megafaun drummer shared loose tales from the fictional town of Piddletractor, set to a "psychedelic children's song-cycle for adults." The LP was impressive and complex, but you could get lost in the maze of Westerlund's fantasy world and idiosyncratic lyrics. Grandma Sparrow thrives live. Onstage, Westerlund swaps out hats, glasses and other costume pieces to animate Piddletractor's colorful citizens. The music, theatrics and humor combine for a delightful trip. While the album benefited from the sweep of Richmond's talented Spacebomb Orchestra, Durham four-piece Canine Heart Sounds make for a tight substitute. Tonight at Noon opens; the new jazz quartet—Jeb Bishop, James Gilmore, Casey Toll and Westerlund's younger brother, Dan—offer a subdued foil for Grandma's antics. 8:30 p.m., $8, 707 N. Person St., Raleigh, 919-839-0536, www.grandmasparrow.com. —Allison Hussey
