Buzzoven, Cough, Lurch

When: Wed., Feb. 16, 9 p.m. 2011

The North Carolina cousin of menacing New Orleans sludge bros Eyehategod, Buzzoven thrives on bass-led thrash slowed by weed and brown liquor. Like Eyehategod, they're scary, too, razing riffs with feedback and old movie samples, playing with the sort of red-eyed conviction that leads to back-alley broken noses. Thanks to a series of reissues via Relapse and Alternative Tentacles, not to mention the last decade's general resurgence of Southern metal, Buzzoven's finally more than a heavy metal footnote. Tonight, in fact, they're the headliner, preceded by Richmond's excellent Cough and Durham's Lurch. —Grayson Currin
