When: Thu., Dec. 22, 7 p.m. 2011
Christmas shopping alternates between the annual soul-crushing stress of lines, crowds and parking lots, and the strangely detached process of clicking on an Amazon Wish List (though it should be noted that many Independent contributors have these and often long for someone to get them, say, that Farscape DVD set). But for all your pain, you'll mostly wind up getting a bunch of impersonal mass-processed items your friends and loved ones don't actually need, which will mostly stimulate the economy of a bunch of outsourced global multinational companies that probably also make, like, bombs and stuff.
Anyway. Should you wish to get something unique and crafted, and know that your Christmas dollars will help to get food and clothing for those in your immediate vicinity, head to Kings Barcade for the annual Buy Local Bazaar, where local crafts-people will feed and entertain you while providing many a locally made gift for you to purchase. There'll be cupcakes and karaoke and music from DJ Pancake, and jewelry and even vegan barbecue. Leave the kids at home and do some shopping in style, though you probably should get them one of those Elmo things anyway. That soulless little bastard has a power over the young'uns no one can explain. It starts at 7 p.m., and admission is free. —Zack Smith
