Buried in Light and Shadow

When: May 16-24 2014

The output of young Chapel Hill-based artist Elsa Hoffman ranges from functional woodwork with an artistic sense of design to artistic metalwork with a strong underpinning of craft. Using a handheld plasma cutter and salvaged sheet metal, she creates sconces and sculptures that frequently draw on animalistic or anthropomorphic figures. Her debut solo show, Buried in Light and Shadow, augments her carpentry and metal works with chiaroscuro lighting. A cut-metal coffin glows in the center of the dimmed gallery; hawks and leopards prowl the shadowy perimeter. —Brian Howe
