Bull City Rumble

When: Fri., Sept. 3, 7 p.m. and Sat., Sept. 4, 11 a.m. 2010

TonUp North Carolina is a nonprofit organization that encourages the riding, restoration and racing of vintage motorcycles. "We are not a gang. We don't wear colors. We are not a threat to your daughters," says TonUp member (and veteran area musician) Pat McGraw with a grin, playing off some folks' perception of a motorcycle club. "We're just a group of guys who like to tinker with old bikes."

And, it turns out, who like to give: For the past five years, TonUp members have co-hosted an annual "rumble" in Raleigh with Durham's Incriminators scooter club—Quadrophenia's rockers versus mods, gone charitable—to raise money for various organizations. Independent Animal Rescue is this year's beneficiary. "The Rumble is essentially just an excuse for a bike and scooter show and music concert," says McGraw.

Based in Durham this year, the Rumble kicks off tonight with pool and darts at the famed Green Room followed by a midnight ride to the Fullsteam brewery. The main event comes tomorrow, inside and outside The Tavern. At 5 p.m., displays and demos in the parking lot give way to, in McGraw's words, "blue-collar music for two-wheel enthusiasts," courtesy of Hearts & Daggers, Blood Red River, Transylvania Transport Company, The Tremors and headliners The Belmont Playboys.
