Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers

When: Sat., Aug. 3, 8 p.m. 2013

It's somewhat surprising that this is Bruce Hornsby's first time playing the Museum of Art's summer concert series, given that his career-long ramble from '80s singer-songwriter stardom to '90s Deadheaddery and '00s bluegrass adventures dovetails well with the museum's own tasteful eclecticism. His 1986 breakthrough hit "The Way It Is," which stood out for its conscience and compassion in the Reagan era, has endured, especially through the Great Recession. But it's the full run of Hornsby's career, reflected in his 2011 live double-album Bride of the Noisemakers, that reveals his deep connection to the American music landscape. Hornsby originals dodge and weave with old-time traditionals, classic rock staples and even classical and jazz passages. The result is a musical journey that wanders all over the map, and gloriously so. —Peter Blackstock
