Broadcloth, Carl Testa, Scrimshaw

When: Wed., June 27, 9:30 p.m. 2012

If the two Connecticut-based performers on this midweek bill are a representative sample, then the Constitution State is a hotbed of the avant garde. Broadcloth is an unusually configured improv trio that utilizes warbling vocals, disjointed cello and an uneasy mix of recorder and accordion. Snatches of melody dissipate into arrhythmia. Carl Testa is well respected as an ensemble bassist, but he's also a mercurial composer and improviser. More in service of texture than structure, he matches tones in odd combinations, wresting moods from instruments that seem incapable of creating them. Scrimshaw opens the $5 show at 9:30 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
