BRITTEN'S WAR REQUIEM

MEMORIAL HALL, CHAPEL HILL |THURSDAY, MARCH 5

The rarity of seeing Benjamin Britten's immense and immensely moving War Requiem performed live justifies the ticket price alone. That this concert incorporates UNC students, the Raleigh Boychoir and world-class singers Anthony Dean Griffey, Nathan Gunn and current "it" soprano Christine Goerke elevates the show into a must-see. Britten fused the Latin text of the Requiem Mass with World War I-era English poems for a feat of pacifist resistance and trembling grandeur. For 85 minutes, Britten unfurls an indictment of war in lacerating surround-sound, employing two orchestras and two choirs. Shostakovich once called this one of the "great works of the human spirit"; kudos to Carolina Performing Arts for mounting it as part of a yearlong commemoration of World War I. 7:30 p.m., $10–$39, 114 E. Cameron Ave., Chapel Hill, 919-843-3333, www.carolinaperformingarts.org. William Robin
