Brentano String Quartet

When: Sat., Sept. 26, 8 p.m. 2015

As an undergraduate at Princeton, I had the privilege of taking a class on the history of the string quartet that featured the Brentanos as the “house band.” In that small classroom, its performances were energetic and incisive, regardless of the repertoire. This program will call on that range. Bach’s experimental Art of the Fugue is all about clarity of line. Mendelssohn’s first quartet is a lyrical contemplation of Beethoven’s quartets. And Brahms’ third and final quartet sees the composer in a surprisingly lighthearted mood. I like to imagine how the group’s energy will translate to the sonic splendor of Baldwin Auditorium. —Dan Ruccia
