Boz Scaggs

When: Wed., May 8, 8 p.m. 2013

With notable vocals, six-string skills and decent lyrics, Boz Scaggs is an old-school triple threat. A teenage chum of Steve Miller and later lead guitarist of Miller's namesake band, Scaggs was also deeply informed by R&B. With his throaty delivery, he comes off as a poor man's Michael McDonald, which has been a challenge for Scaggs—that is, balancing string-laden adult pop strains with the more rugged roots and rock-oriented ones. At times, his latest LP, Memphis, suggests he's found the formula, particularly with the Steely Dan cover "Pearl of the Quarter." But "Love on a Two Way Street" reeks of overproduced '70s cheese, reminding you of Scaggs' blind spot. —Chris Parker
