BIRDS OF AVALON & BODY GAMES

CAT'S CRADLE BACK ROOM, CARRBORO | SATURDAY, AUG. 8

Raleigh's Birds of Avalon and Carrboro's Body Games don't sound a lot alike. Birds of Avalon are a righteous rock band, sometimes using two drummers as the caboose behind sharp and dueling guitar lines, spectral keyboards and vocals that seem to take hooks and scatter them through an array of prisms. Body Games, meanwhile, are an electronic trio who use big bass as the floor and florid synthesizer tones as the ceiling for uncanny tunes. Where Birds of Avalon dredge up the past, Body Games seem to fantasize about our sci-fi pop future. Both bands, though, love to suggest synesthetic psychedelic visions with their music, fortified by their heavy effects and shared use of projections. In short, this will be a strange trip to two very different and wonderful places. Sunless, the guise of Hometapes founder and new Durham arrival Adam Heathcott, opens with creeping tones. 9 p.m., $7, 300 E.
