Bobbie Ann Mason

When: Wed., July 20, 7:30 p.m. 2011

Since 1980, Bobbie Ann Mason has been one of the best writers of short stories, with her powerful, observant tales offering lyrical and sometimes heartbreaking insights into strange and lonely souls in Southern communities whose eroded histories further reflect the protagonists' conflicts. Her latest work takes her far from her familiar territory to the fields of World War II Europe in the novel The Girl in the Blue Beret. Former Allied pilot Marshall Stone returns decades later to the site where his plane was shot down in Belgium, and his thoughts are haunted by those who helped him escape the Nazis, including the girl of the title. Soon he finds himself seeking out those who helped him escape—and in the process he gains a new direction in his life. Mason will read from and sign copies of The Girl in the Blue Beret at 7:30 p.m. —Zack Smith
