Not to be confused with the documentary inflicted upon generation after generation of film students at N.C. State University, where a filmmaker dying of AIDS depicts his life through a solid blue screen for 80 seemingly endless minutes (we still love you, Joe Gomez), the first in Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy, is a powerful look at grief and expression. Juliette Binoche gives one of her best performances as a young wife and mother who loses her family and cuts herself off from the world, only to slowly re-emerge. Featuring strong performances, a rich use of color and a terrific score by Zbigniew Preisner that the film's action was timed to, Blue is a reminder of what we lost when Kieslowski died in 1996. The film is presented as part of the Cinema Inc. subscription series; prorated memberships are available. —Zack Smith
