Black Nativity

Rated PG 92 min. 2013

While a fair amount of righteousness is to be expected with Christian-themed film being released around the holidays, the sanctimony practically drips from the screen. With producer T.D. Jakes hovering over her shoulder, I'm sure director Kasi Lemmons felt the easiest way to display Langston's slow slide into thughood was by having the kid spray paint "Xmas Sux" on a wall. Thankfully, the acting miraculously keeps the film from being a complete bust. Jennifer Hudson, an Oscar winner for Dreamgirls, delivers a portrayal of the young man's struggling mother that may be the greatest performance of her career. Also with Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker.
