Birds of Avalon

When: Mon., Dec. 29, 9 p.m. 2014

They’ve got restaurants to run, bars to tend and clubs to manage; surely the members of Raleigh’s classically psych champions Birds of Avalon don’t have time to keep that flock together, too? Well, not really. Appearances by the band, who used to tour and record like those were life’s only prerogatives, have slowed to rather rare events, especially now that their former label home of Volcom Entertainment has folded. But in January, as part of a brief tour with Ex Hex, Birds of Avalon will actually release perhaps their best set yet, a five-song EP called Disappearance. Recorded by guitarist (and chef) Cheetie Kumar in Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium, these tunes manage to remain concise and feel expansive. The guitars rove through sheets of distortion and noise, while heavy drums and heavenly hooks keep the mix aimed ever forward. It’s seriously remarkable work for a band that seems sometimes to pretend it no longer exists. —Grayson Haver Currin
