Bill Frisell ft. Petra Haden, Hank Roberts, Luke Bergman

When: Thu., Sept. 14, 8 p.m. 2017

Bill Frisell is best known for his clean, cool, pure tone as a jazz guitarist, but his music, across thirty years and contributions to more than a hundred records, spans a wonderfully weird range of styles. His 1983 debut record, which featured reverb-laden guitar and upright bass, hinted at ambient music while retaining a jazzy center, but last year's When You Wish Upon a Star features a zany array of interpretations of pieces from films—he follows "Moon River" with the theme from The Godfather. As of late, Frisell has assembled HARMONY, a quartet featuring bassist Luke Bergman, vocalist Petra Haden, and cellist Hank Roberts, to perform a variety of American music. Their oeuvre ranges folk songs such as "Oh Shenandoah" to renditions of film music. Their performance will in some sense embody the arch of Frisell's musical career—eclectic, virtuosic, and celebratory. —Noah Rawlings
