Big Fat Gap, Grant Farm

When: Wed., May 9, 9 p.m. 2012

If you missed the Shakori Hills festival last month, this midweek pairing approximates the roots music you'd find at the event's sun-drenched stages. Chapel Hill's Big Fat Gap plays bluegrass without pretension, powering through with bright, up-tempo tangles of banjo and mandolin and relying on road-worn three-part harmony to get the point across. Grant Farm are a likable jam band from Colorado, and while they're unlikely to surprise you, their bright fusion of shambling folk and soaring classic rock is effective. They use a different set of tools, but they share the Gap's talent for buoyant melody, zooming through bluegrass-inflected guitar solos with irrepressible energy. —Jordan Lawrence
