Benji Hughes, The Feeds, The Temperance League

When: Thu., July 25, 9 p.m. 2013

Benji Hughes should have been famous: His last album, 2008's A Love Extreme, remains a double platter that never falters, filled with earworm singles that bridge rock 'n' roll sweetness and electronic finesse, sometimes recalling Beck's best. There was top-tier press—a four-star review in Rolling Stone—and placements on prime-time TV shows. The breakthrough never came, but Hughes endures much as he always has, hitting small clubs, drinking and rocking. Barrel-chested and mightily bearded, he leads a loud and limber crew, swilling beers and reliably losing his shirt. His album was safe, but his shows are not, for better and worse. The Temperance League, another Charlotte act running on cheap booze and classic rock, are rowdier and more righteous. They land somewhere between Springsteen and the Stones, offering blue-collar anthems flush with hummable melodies. The Feeds take the middle slot. —Jordan Lawrence
