Benji Hughes, The Feeds, London Dungeon

When: Fri., Sept. 6, 9:30 p.m. 2013

On his punningly titled 2008 debut, A Love Extreme, Charlotte singer-songwriter Benji Hughes combines a slew of influences ranging from the Heads to Haggard. Throughout this 25-song sprawl, Hughes fully inhabits his songs, from the sly oomph of "Tight T-Shirt" to the Randy Newman-esque stateliness of "All You've Got to Do is Fall in Love." His songwriting flexibility extends to his voice, a warm rasp that can rise to an alluring falsetto, though he sometimes employs a midrange tone that sounds like neither. Lyrically, Hughes is a keen observer whose songs glisten with details, from front-row Eagles tickets to being stood up at a Dairy Queen. A brawny, bearded vision of mythical 1970s cool, Hughes is a riveting presence. —David Klein
