Ben Fountain

When: Sat., May 5, 11 a.m. 2012

Now that the Iraq War is over (ha ha, oh, I'm crying), we begin the task of deciding which novel will become its Catch-22. One critic has nominated Ben Fountain's first novel, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Following the surviving members of Bravo Squad on their Bush Administration-sponsored victory tour after defeating a team of insurgents, the novel scrutinizes war, late capitalism, football and our weird American moment. Fountain's work, including the story collection Brief Encounters with Che Guevara, has won an O. Henry Prize, a Pushcart Prize and a Whiting Writers Award. He reads at 7 p.m. Friday at the Regulator Bookshop in Durham and 11 a.m. Saturday at McIntyre's Books in Fearrington Village. —Chris Vitiello
